New Vorwerk Production Facility in Shanghai

Once you turn your attention fully to the subject of opening up new markets, it’s impossible to ignore a nation so large and fascinating as the real world market that is China." These were the words of Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid, managing partner of Vorwerk & Co. at the opening of the new production facility in Shanghai. As Dr. Mittelsten Scheid stressed at the ceremony on March 27, Vorwerk was taking up an international challenge and poised to take advantage of the new opportunities in a global market.

Vorwerk first began market testing of floor-care appliances on the Chinese market back in 1995. In the wake of successful tests in Shanghai, the first sales offices were set up and production was initially commenced on rented premises.

The Group’s decision to build a production hall of its own grew out of the favorable sales trend coupled with promising forecasts for the future development of the Chinese market. "This is a way of underlining our willingness to enter into a long-term commitment in China," said Dr. Mittelsten Scheid, stressing how the Chinese authorities had proved extremely cooperative in this matter.

Vorwerk & Co. was first established as a family business in Wuppertal in 1883 and is, today, one of the world’s major direct sellers of high-quality articles in four different market segments:
  • direct sales of household cleaning appliances, Thermomix and fitted kitchens
  • specialist retail outlets for kitchens and bathrooms
  • carpeting for the home sector (retail) and business premises
  • industrial services in the facility-management, security, leasing, financial-services and data-processing segments.

The Vorwerk production plant in Shanghai is the group’s fourth after Elektrowerke in Wuppertal-Laaken and the facilities in Arcore, Italy, and Cloyes, France.

The Vorwerk Kobold VK 130 and the electric brush EB 350 plus a range of accessories will be among the products manufactured in Shanghai for the Asian market. By the year 2002, we plan to increase the number of employees from today’s 16 to around 70 people.

The newly built production hall in the QingPu industrial park less than 20 miles southwest of Shanghai houses assembly and storage units for floor-care appliances. The one-story hall complete with office and social wing covers almost 50,000 square feet and took less than a year to complete. The construction work was carried out by the Chinese operation of Züblin AG, Stuttgart.
