It all began in France back in 1970. Because "potages", i.e. chowders or thickened soups, are extremely popular there, a Frenchman came up with the idea of combining cooking and mixing functions in the same device. This would make it much simpler to prepare soups. The idea was well received by Vorwerk. And so it was that the cold mixer was turned into the hot mixer VM 2000, also lovingly referred to as the "soup mixer". It proved equally adept at preparing sauces and desserts. This is how the first Vorwerk hot mixer and thus the "grandfather" of the successful Thermomix came into being. Over a 30-year period, the device has been developed into a multi-purpose kitchen appliance.

In many other countries where Vorwerk does not have its own companies, Thermomix is sold via distributors.
